Среди молодых людей того времени существовала даже определённая хакерская культура, базирующаяся на принципах открытого обмена программами и приёмами конструирования аппаратуры между друзьями. Не случайно одним из истинных хакеров был Ричард Столман (Richard Stallman), написавший редактор EMACS, а затем основавший FSF. Слово hacker возникло, скорее всего, от hack through - "прорубиться".
